New groups for Southern Link scrap Supporters and opponents of the long talked-about Southern Link highway are preparing themselves for battle, with new groups being formed on both sides of the debate. Yesterday, a new community group called Vision Nelson Tasman was officially launched, and is backing the construction of the road. While another group, Guardians of Victory, opposes the road and has held several meetings in the past month. The Southern Link, or Southern Arterial Route, is proposed to go from St Vincent St, past Victory Square and through the railway reserve to Whakatu Drive. Last year, the government announced that it would investigate whether there was a business case for the road. Vision Nelson Tasman is chaired by Richmond businessman Craig Dennis and he says it’s being established as a coalition of organisations supporting regional progress. “The Southern Arterial Route is a key piece of infrastructure that

will give Nelson a much-needed boost,” he says. “This road will make it easier for people to travel to and from the wider region to the city and port, as well as offering the chance to re-develop the waterfront and Victory into modern, vibrant sectors of our community.” He says Nelson has the secondfastest growth rate in New Zealand and over half its population growth is occurring in Stoke. The region is on target to hit 100,000 people by 2020. Guardians of Victory coordinator Gayle Petch was unavailable for comment, but had previously told Nelson Weekly that completed studies don’t support building the road and they’re working with New Zealand Transport Agency to give them the concerns of Victory residents. The government’s investigation is due to be completed this year.

Nelson has one of the highest rates of new-age followers in the country, with one expert suggesting the “Nelson lifestyle” is the reason why. But the overall figure is still less than one per cent, just 73 out of every thousand people, according to the 2013 census. Almost half of Nelsonians stated that they had no religion affiliation with 47.5 per cent ticking ‘no religion’ on their census forms, with an-
other 4.89 per cent objecting to answer the question. Just over one per cent identify as Buddhist, 0.48 per cent as Hindu, Avery Dash 0.19 per cent as Islam/Muslim, 0.2 per cent Jewish, 0.3 per cent as Maori Christian, 0.39 per cent selected ‘other religions’ and 39.3 per cent as Christian. Jacob Chandler Nelson’s most talented musical performers will compete in the regional Smokefreerockquest finals this Friday in an effort to earn a place at the nationals finals in Auckland. Eleven Nelson bands made it into the finals after playing at the regional heats on Saturday, as well as soloist Gemma Christall and duo Zeal. Tom Somerville, lead guitarist of Nelson College band ITELO, says the band was stoked to make it into the regional final. “It was great, we did it last year and didn’t make the regional finals so it was nice to get through this year. We had a slightly different lineup this
year and we’re tighter as a group.” He says the band will be practising hard in their spare time to before going up on stage with a new song at Friday’s event. Smokefreerockquest founder and director, Glenn Common, says the real emphasis of the competition is on participation and the experience of performing on stage. “Some entrants will no doubt go on to success in the Kiwi music industry, but for most of the young musicians SFRQ is all about the experience of performing live on stage in a professional set up, meeting others who share their passion for performing music, and getting constructive and

impartial feedback from more experienced musicians who are our judges and mentors.” He says a lot of the bands gain a huge amount of support from their teachers, who will often come along to the performances as well. “The support that contemporary musicians get in schools these days is evident in the number of young musicians who get to performance standard.” The two top bands from the regional finals will submit a video entry to the national judging pool for selection as national finalists. Stamp collectors show their best Monique Bergman Despite the world’s technological advances and changes in the way we do things, one hobby still remains unchanged – stamp collecting. The Nelson Philatelic Society showcased an exhibition of stamp collections at their stamp club open day, held at Stoke School last weekend. It proved very popular with both young and old collectors, with free stamps given out to children. The society promotes the hobby of stamp collecting and provides information
through discussion and demonstration at their monthly meetings. They also invite guest speakers with specialist knowledge and maintain a library for the use of members. “Some people see an advert about the open day and think it is a good time to get rid of old bags of stamps, but most people come in with their collections and it is a chance for people to see stamps they may not have seen before,” says committee member, Pam Frahm. Weldon Lineham, from Stoke, has been collecting stamps for around 40 years. “I started collecting stamps when I was
young and had a break, and when my hair started turning the right colour I went back into it. It is a relaxing hobby but you are also focused on something, it keeps your mind active and it’s a good form of education, you learn a lot when you are researching. Gun pointed at bar patron: A man has been arrested after a customer of a Bridge St bar had a pistol pointed at him. Police located the offender and a subsequent search found he was in possession of an air gun (pistol), tomahawk and a tyre iron, along with cannabis. The 52 year old Nelson man appeared in court on Friday charged will firearms and cannabisrelated offences. After three days of having a road cone stuck on the top of the Cathedral’s flag pole and toying with who could remove it, Reverend Nick Kirk woke up last Thursday morning with the perfect solution – a broom. Nicked climbed the internal ladders of the Christ Church Cathedral tower, clutching a broom. When he reached the top, he tied the broom to the rope that is used to hoist a flag and raised it, successfully removing the cone from the pole. Simple as that. “I got up this morning and just knew how I could get it down,” he told Nelson Live, which first reported the story last Thursday. Nick says a wallet was found on the roof but says he is leaving it up to police to work out how it got there and if it has

Tracy Alexander, who runs the coffee cart at 1903 Square, says there was plenty of interest in the cone. “Business was great, the number of
people who came down to get photos and have a chitter chatter about how it got up there.” She says there are plenty of theories about who may have put it there, but she thought it may have been someone “trying to get closer to God”. She says her punters were disappointed to see it come down, especially since they all missed the moment it was finally brought down. Nick says it was “risky business” for whoever put the cone up there. “Very risky, they would have had to scale two big walls then the tower and the flag pole.” Police say they are investigating the incident but haven’t made any arrests yet. It had not been a good few months for George Randall. He lived in a home that made him and his family sick, he lost his job and was diagnosed as an alcoholic. Life was tough and George’s way of dealing with it was to “sulk”. But a year or so earlier, he and his wife Rhea had been accepted by Habitat for Humanity to have a house built for them, along with three other families, on St Vincent St. When work began on building the four homes, George headed along to complete his mandatory 500 hours of work on the project, “still sulking”. He says what happened next was the wake up call he needed. “I felt like everything was falling to pieces and I wanted the best for my family, but I just couldn’t cope anymore. Julian [Shields] and Rob [Silcock] just cracked the whip and didn’t let
me get my head down. I just had to work.” Soon George’s 500 hours passed but he kept turning up and working. By the end of the project he had logged more than 1000 hours. Once the homes were built, George went along to Cover Staff and got work as a labourer and then got a job at NZ King Salmon, where he still works today. He says helping build his own home gave him a sense of worth and new skills. “I was doing things I didn’t think I could do and when we moved in our home was warm and I know everything about this house. When the heat pumps were installed I watched the guy do it and asked how to change the filter, now I change it every year before winter.” Next weekend George, Rhea and the other three families that live in the Habitat homes will officially take over the ownership of the homes. Photo: Andrew Board. years ago the families have been paying rent to Habitat, now that money has been given back to them to form a huge deposit which will be used to get a bank mortgage. Nelson’s Habitat chairman Rob Silcock says it’s a special moment to see families take over the ownership of their homes and it also allows the organisation
to move onto the next build, which for him and his team will be in Kawai St later this winter. “It’s a great moment and nice to see these four families get their homes. Now they can do what they want with them, sell them, whatever, it’s theirs.” Rhea says the home has meant more to her family than just a roof over

their heads. “It’s got us on the property ladder and we thought we’d be renting until the boys [aged 10 and 7] had left school. Since we moved here the kids are hardly ever sick, George doesn’t have asthma anymore. It’s been a big change. It’s amazing how much of a difference just the environment makes.” But it isn’t just the Randalls who have had a
huge turnaround in fortunes thanks to Habitat. The other three families in the cul-de-sac say they’re hugely grateful for their homes. Api and Rota Domoni and their five children were living in a three bedroom home before Habitat built their new home. Api – originally from Fiji – says he still vividly remembers laying the first stone.
“I remember Rob and I laying the first two blocks on the bottom corner of the house. Rob kept telling me ‘Api, if these two blocks aren’t level the whole house will be crooked’. That’s a nice story to tell.” The other homes will be owned by two Burmese families. Pa Peng Tun and his wife Nu Vang say their home has been life-changing. They never thought they’d be able to buy a house in Nelson for them and their three children. “We saw the Habitat for Humanity programme talked about at Victory School and we applied. We are very happy and very grateful to Habitat. We are very happy here,” says Pa Peng. Ram Za Thang Lianching and his wife Ngai Ciang echo those statements. Gratitude, excitement, happiness, it beams from all the families. The families officially take over the ownership of their homes on May 29, with a ceremony on Sunday, May 31.

A group of Nelson College students want to bring back a unique Nelson holiday – Spud Monday. Spud Monday was celebrated in Nelson on the first Monday of August up until the outbreak of the Second World War. The day was a public holiday in Nelson only and was created to commemorate the plight of early Nelson settlers who came so close to starvation that they dug up their seed potatoes, already planted, to use as food. In recent years, the Nelson Provincial Museum has held promotions around Spud Monday. But six Nelson College students want to take it further and have a public holiday reinstated for Nelsonians. Quest building Loan trust earns top licence weeks away from opening Jacob Chandler The new Quest hotel apartment building is set to open in a few weeks time, with contractors putting the finishing touches onto the building. Excavation for the complex began in August last year with senior site manager, Shane Etridge, believing the building will come to completion in around two weeks time. “On average, we have about 60 to 80 guys on site constantly at this stage of the project as we’re finishing off the inside and carpark area.” Fifty-five tonne of reinforcing steel has been put into the foundation alone, with around 4000 cubic metres of concrete used to form the building. Shane says once construction is complete the building will be handed over to Quest fully furnished and ready to go. “There is a process that Quest does after we hand the building over where they spend about a week training their staff up before the building opens to the public.” Shane says the construction has gone smoothly but one of the biggest issues was finding enough staff to complete the build. “Nelson seems to be filled with good trades, the crucial part is finding companies to work on the project who have enough staff. Something this big really does suck a lot of people in and at times has affected other projects around the place.”
The Nelson Enterprise Loan Trust has passed its greatest test – earning a licence from the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, meaning it will be able to continue to support emerging local businesses. The trust was forced to apply for the non-bank deposit taker status from the reserve bank after it was stripped of its charitable status because it loaned money to businesses, not charities. Manager Bruce Dyer says they were “elated” to come through with flying colours. Usually the status is required by building societies, credit unions and finance
companies. Nelson Enterprise Loan Trust is tiny in comparison. The trust has been operating since 1997 and loans money to new or emerging businesses. Since it was established, the Bruce Dyer. trust has made 240 loans, totalling $1.88 million to “ethical businesses” in the wider Nelson region. Bruce says applying for the status was a bit like “preparing a business plan” and
that the exercise was beneficial. “If we didn’t get this standard we would have had to close the doors, so we’re elated that we’ve qualified.” Bruce says it’s especially “affirming” to see the businesses they’ve helped operate successfully for a number of years. He says finding investors is a challenge, but they’re fortunate to have some key investors at either no interest rate or at a rate that’s less than the standard. “We’re lucky to have some very good investors and we’re always happy to talk to anyone who may like to look at investing in the trust.”

Nelson’s growth is forecast to slow over the next 30 years but Tasman is expected to boom, according to the latest state of the nation report released by the Salvation Army. Titled Mixed Fortunes, the report highlights several social issues and breaks it down by region. Of interest was the report’s forecast of population which shows Nelson growth will slow, increasing by just 2000 people to the year 2043 and at a rate of four per cent. The report says that will take Nelson’s population to 46,700 in 28 years. In Tasman it’s a different story. The current population of 48,700 will increase by 15 per cent over the next 28 years to 55,900. The total of New Zealand’s population over that time is expected to grow by 27 per cent, with Auckland expected to grow by a whopping 49 per cent over the next 30 years. Canterbury is expected to have a 30 per cent increase and Waikato a 22 per cent increase.

Breaking bread for cancer trusts Nelsonians are getting behind the fight against breast cancer, hosting various “pink breakfast” events throughout May. Already there have been several “pink breakfasts” held around the region, and at the end of the month city restaurant Harrys will be hosting another. Harrys owner, Harry Morris, says he and one of his chefs went to Founders Brewery last year to cook the breakfasts at their fundraiser. But with Founders owners Carol and John Duncan away this year, Harry agreed to host a pink breakfast at his restaurant for a year. “Carol wanted to keep it going so I said we’d have it here this year and move it back to Founders next year. It was a big day for them

Proceeds will be split between the National Breast Cancer Foundation and the Nelson Regional Breast and Gynaecological Cancer Trust.

Fluoride in water: It is disappointing that the Ministry of Health is again touting putting fluoride into drinking water supplies throughout New Zealand. It is true that water fluoridation doses children with just a tiny amount of fluoride, but even tiny amounts of fluoride consumed every day can cause severe problems. Thousands of children have developed crippling skeletal fluorosis from the daily drinking of water containing 6ppm of fluoride. Fluoridation in New Zealand puts approximately 1ppm fluoride into the water. Advocates claim that this amount is harmless. However, if 1 gram will kill a child and 6ppm will cripple a child, is it really safe to dose every child with 1ppm every day? Particularly for the children who drink a lot of water? There is no need to put this poison in the water. Brushing teeth with fluoride toothpaste is a thousand times more effective than fluoridation. If we really want to do something to reduce cavities, we should be focusing on getting children to brush their teeth. Dan McGuire. Thought to be Private Leslie Richard Kemp Marshall (serial no. 3/3464). Marshall was born on 17 November 1891, the son of Mr and Mrs R. Marshall, of Lower Moutere. On the Auckland War Memorial Museum Cenotaph database his next of kin is listed as R. Marshall (father). Marshall worked as a farmer for H. Hewitson before embarking for service during WWI. He embarked with the 8th Reinforcements New Zealand Medical Corps on 14 July 1917 from Wellington, New Zealand, for Plymouth, England. He served for just over a year in Western Europe. The last unit he served in was the New Zealand Medical Corps, 2 Field Ambulance. Marshall was killed in action on 30 August 1918 in Bapaume, France. He is buried in Beaulencourt British Cemetery, Ligny-Thilloy, Pas-de-Calais, France, and his memorial is located on Upper Moutere War Memorial.

Music The Nelson Male Voice Choir is riding the crest of a wave right now. Conducted by Andrea Hamilton and accompanied by pianists Pauline Boyd and Susan Stokes, the choir moves on from Anzac Day to a concert of popular music by The Beatles, Beach Boys, Mamas and Papas, plus show tunes, jazz standards and New Zealand songs. Guests will be the excellent Nelson College for Girls Choir and Jazz Band, and the modern ‘Annesbrook’, in Saxton Road, Stoke is the venue for this great afternoon of top-drawer music, on Sunday, June 14th, at 2.00pm. The choir has 45 current members, many having joined in the last two years, and continues to break new ground with its performances, sometimes featuring drums, bass, and other instruments. Last year, it released a superb CD of male voice repertoire. New members are always welcome at the Reformed Church, Enner Glynn, every Monday at 6.45pm. Off Your Rockers Choir is the only Nelson-based choir that is for over 60s to sing rock music. Based on the much loved Young@Heart choir, our main objective is to have fun singing music. In the six years we have been singing, we have sung at many venues around Nelson. Our talented Musical Director Jan Trayes, and our wonderful guitarist Jo Taylor, provide a varied repertoire of songs and harmonies that we all enjoy. We have 30 choir members, the majority between 70 and 93, who have been with us from the first year, a testament to the joy and camaraderie of singing. We negotiate payment for our gigs on a case by case basis. Currently we are sponsored by Hangar 58 and sing at their Carvery lunch every second Sunday of the month. Craft Potters still going strong after 42 years
Craft Potters is continuing its mission to foster the art and craft of pottery, holding a series of classes through the winter including a four-week workshop with wellknown Nelson potter, Alan Ballard, that started last week. Craft Potters was formed in 1973 by an enthusiastic group of potters attending classes at Nelson Polytechnic. It was the first organised potters' group in Nelson and grew rapidly, moving into its own premises at 202 Ranzau Rd in 1984. On Saturday, the group started the latest in a series of classes with Alan taking a "throwing" workshop that will run for
the next three weekends. Although Craft Potters committee member Judi Salisbury says they are already holding Wednesday morning classes with Erika Aupperle, they are also running weekend and evening classes to attract more potential members. "Not everyone can come along to the morning classes so we have classes and workshops outside working hours now," Judi says. "We wanted to attract younger members and people who are working." Judi says the Tuesday evening classes with Kirsten Boswijk are proving popular, while they had six people attend Alan's first throwing workshop at the weekend. She
says people can still attend one or more of Alan's workshops that will be held for the next three Saturdays and Sundays, excluding Queen's Birthday Weekend. Kirsten Boswijk also held a one-day course at Craft Potters earlier this month, while the group held two Boredom Buster sessions for schoolchildren during the last school holidays. Committee member Rita Edgar says the Craft Potters courses, which can be attended by members and non-members, cover a range of techniques and skills and have been the starting point for a number of the Nel-
son region's top potters. Craft Potters is also the only institution in the region to offer a Diploma in Ceramic Arts through the University of Otago. Rita says Craft Potters has excellent facilities including 11 potting wheels, six kilns, glazes and stains, clay for sale and a gallery where works can be sold to the public. Brook fence 'on track' Almost four kilometres of pestproof fencing has been erected around the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary and the project is on track to be completed by this time next year, says its general manager. Earthworks and fence installation have been ongoing since last October and general manager of the sanctuary, Hudson Dodd, says it is going well. “We’ve had some challenges, particularly addressing the slip that’s occurred that impacted the Dun Mountain track, but we’re working with Nelson City Council on that,” he says. “Other than that, it’s going very well.” The Brook Waimarama Sanctuary is erecting a 14.5 kilometre predator proof fence to enable the indigenous fauna to recover within the 715ha sanctuary.
Helicopters New Zealand has been carrying fence posts, strainers, aluminium hoods and other materials to the site, to allow construction workers from Xcluder and Higgins Fencing to continue building the fence. About 8000 posts will be used in the construction of the 14.5 kilometre fence. A pest-proof fence will allow ‘zero’ pests to be achieved, which will enable fuller restoration of the ecosystem, including the re-introduction of some of the country’s most endangered species. Once the fence is complete, there will be an eradication operation to remove any pests remaining within the sanctuary, followed by continued monitoring inside the sanctuary and trapping around the perimeter.

When Italian Gianluca Pomarico moved to Nelson nearly four years ago for a lifestyle change, he had never heard of rugby league, now it’s his passion. Gianluca, who works as a chef at Stefano’s Restaurant in Nelson, was a semi-professional soccer player for the Monza Club back home in Italy. He likes keeping fit and trains regularly at Results Gym in Nelson and, while there, he met a group of friends who introduced him to the game of rugby league. He was hooked and started watching NRL matches, and thought to himself that he would like to try and have a go at playing the game one day. Meanwhile, his new mates asked if he would like to have a run for their local touch football team last summer. Despite never having played touch before he showed good speed from his soccerplaying days and, coupled with his size, his mates thought he had the ideal physique for rugby league and encouraged him to go along to a league training session. Four new Nelson black belts Four new black belts were earned at the Seido Karate grading evening held in Nelson last week. Senpais Richard Butler, Zeus Goyone, Daniel Kirby and Jose Perez all gained their Shodan, beginner level black belt. It generally takes around five to eight years, starting from beginner level, to work towards a Seido Karate black belt. Students train two to three times a week. To earn the black belt, students must memorise 15 Kata’s, which are ancient forms passed down from previous masters, making up their own self-defence techniques and partaking in 40 one and a half minute fights against 40 different

black belts. Andy says all four students passed and did very well. “Sparing is not to eliminate the opponent, it is to test their attitude. There are restrictions on the opponents and both fighters must wear safety gear such as foam-covered boots to ensure no-one gets hurt,” says Andy. There are around 80 black belts living in Nelson and 67 of them, along with senior karate students, watched and supported the four men involved in grading. “It was very inspiring for all and it was a celebration of our practice, karate helps people’s lives, it is about turning them into better people within our community,” says Andy.

Nelson adventure racer Brent Edwards showed laser-accurate navigational skills in winning the Nelson Orienteering Club's event in the Maitai Valley on Sunday by a massive 25 minutes. Brent raced around the 24 controls in 56 minutes 21 seconds, making the challenging long orange course look like a walk in the park. Waimea College student Cameron
Jones matched Brent's speed but not his map reading skills to finish second in 1hr 21min 25sec, with Imogene Scott third in 1hr 23min 28sec. The course proved too much for many of the 48 competitors with 24 DNFs. Jane and Ben Alloway won the short orange event, Angela Mangnall won the yellow while Paulina Harrison won the white course events.
The club's next event is the first race of the Winter Night Rogaine series, starting at Tahunanui on Wednesday June 3. Races will also be held at Waimea College on June 10, Stoke on June 17 and the Grampians on June 24. Registration for all races in the series is from 5.30pm. Entry is $5 and competitors need to bring a good torch and reflective clothing.

Suburban Blue won a tough match against Jacks Navy in their Grade 1 club netball game at Saxton Stadium on Saturday, while Suburban Black couldn't get past Richmond Sleepers in Grade 3. Top seed, Jacks jumped out to a 8–5 lead on the back of some accurate shooting by Sheila Hunt and Marie James. Suburban introduced Arcadia Edmond-Whale at goal shoot at the first break and her impact was immediate. The Blue team settled early, with Arcadia a good target under the basket, she quickly developed a formidable partnership with goal attack Dakota Wesney-Hurtado. Suburban had an abundance of possession while Jacks were practically starved of ball as their shooters had a miserly four attempts at goal (all successful). Suburban went into the major break with a two goal advantage. Jacks centre, Vicki Read toiled throughout to provide the all important link, while Jan Willocks at wing defence was a competent ball carrier and looked down court for the long feed.
